EAAT has been developing and constructing magnetic bearings for 20 years. Individual designs of these magnetic bearings are used in a wide range of applications and branches. The spectrum spans from magnetic bearings with a bearing force of 50kN and a speed of 5,800 RPM through to bearings with less than 100N bearing force and a speed of up to 140,000 RPM.
Magnetic bearings allow contact-free, lubricant-free and practically maintenance-free shaft bearing. They are therefore used in vacuum applications, etc.
Active magnetic bearings
With active magnetic bearings, electromagnets are arranged around the shaft. The shaft position is detected based on position sensors. Digital control electronics compare the nominal and actual values of the position and transfers the control signals to the power electronics. These, in turn, control the electromagnets so the shaft remains or moves to its defined position. The nominal value can also be continuously changed to move the shaft, e.g. on a circulating path.
Passive magnetic bearings
In passive magnetic bearings, the bearing forces are generated by permanent magnets. Depending on the forces exerted on the shaft, it is displaced from the centered position. This is maintained as long as these forces are exerted. Passive bearings are therefore used when a force-related bearing deviation is permitted. Passive magnetic bearings are used in combination with mechanical / conventional bearings or active magnetic bearings. A contact-free bearing in the radial and axial direction is not physically possible using only passive bearings.
